History of Ardith's Garden

In 2000, the Seekers – a group of women united by their passion for antiques and history – established a community garden in memory of one of their early founders, Ardith Fichter. Her own garden was a masterpiece of color and care. This cherished space now serves as a living tribute to Ardith’s legacy and reflects the Seekers’ dedication to preserving beauty and heritage within their community. Securing a 75 by 50 foot plot in 2002, on the northwest corner of the Edson Fichter Nature Area, the Seekers led by Sallee Gasser transformed the space into a flourishing sanctuary. Ardith’s Garden is now a place where flowers bloom, friendships flourish, and the past is honored with every season’s growth. Joining Sallee in 2012, Helen Beitia and other volunteers worked tirelessly to maintain the garden. They faced numerous challenges – from invasive weeds and unpredictable soil conditions to harsh weather and water supply issues. Yet their commitment never wavered. Helen steadfastly working alongside her to develop and nurture the space. Sallee remained the guiding force behind the garden’s growth until her passing at 93 in 2024

Today, Ardith’s Garden has blossomed into a beloved community retreat, a testament to her spirit and the Seekers’ unwavering dedication. The group has partnered with the Fish and Game and other community members to ensure the garden continues to thrive, despite ongoing challenges. Their goals remain steadfast: to cultivate beauty with native and pollinator- friendly plants, providing a vibrant display of color from spring to fall. More than just a garden, it is a place of peace and reflection, offering a sanctuary for all who visit. Located within the nature area named in honor of Ardith’s naturalist husband, Edson, it stands as a tribute to their incredible gifts and deep love of the natural world.
