History of Edson Fichter Nature Area

The purchase of land for the Nature Area was approved in 1993 by Idaho Fish and Game Director Jerry Conley with support from Governor Cecil Andrus in 1993; both of whom dedicated their lives to the outdoors and improving wildlife. In 1995 it was named the Edson Fichter Nature Area to honor an Idaho State University professor and artist that was dedicated to educating citizens about the value of wildlife. In 1997 Dale Reavis worked with the Simplot Company to install the bridge over the Portneuf River. Bonnie Jakobus designed the original interpretive signs that were installed by Scout troops. Ken Kiesling built the first fishing pier in 2000. Ardith’s garden was started in 2001 with Sallee Gasser acting as the coordinator. In 2009-2010 the fishing pond was established with a large donation from Roger Humberger. Numerous volunteers have contributed their time and expertise in improving the Area; some major contributors were Jeff Anderson, Garth Hall, Alissa Salmore, Sandra Thorne-Brown, and Melissa Wyatt. In 2024 Jane and Don Strubel started the “Friends of Edson Fichter Nature Area” to continue the work of improving the Area and educating citizens on the value of fish and wildlife.
